​Art has power.

One day I met a friend for lunch at an old diner. On the table was a partial roll of paper towels, a basket of saltines, and a rack full of condiments. As we were finishing lunch and about to leave, I stood up and took a photo of what was in the center of the table. I told my friend, “that tells a story!” I did a pastel painting of it. That one piece changed the direction of my art. 

 

Suddenly, I was looking closer at the everyday things in my life, and seeing beauty in them. Light shining through a freshly peeled tangerine was amazing. The wonderful colors of a handful of popsicles, a bag of bananas in a clear grocery bag were showing me movement and color I have never noticed before. My soft pastels were anything but soft. They made these paintings come alive. 

 

A pastel of a PEZ dispenser, a bag of Cheetos, a white egg perched in a dirty shop vise, and people stopping and discussing them. When I have art shows I love standing in the background and seeing how my art has an effect on people, and loving their reactions. 

 

Art is powerful and I hope my pastels have a powerful effect on you.
